Integration of Gesture and Speech in Children
نویسندگان
چکیده
We examined whether children's ability to integrate speech and gesture follows the pattern of a broader developmental shift between 3and 5-year-olds (Ramscar & Gitcho, 2007) regarding the ability to process two pieces of information simultaneously. In Experiment 1, 3-year-olds, 5-year-olds and adults were presented with either an iconic gesture or a spoken sentence or a combination of the two on a computer screen, and were instructed to select a photograph that best matched the message. 3-year-olds did not integrate information in speech and gesture, but 5-year-olds and adults did. In Experiment 2, 3-year-olds were presented with the same speech and gesture as in Experiment 1 that were produced live by an experimenter. When presented live, 3-year-olds could integrate speech and gesture. We concluded that development of the integration ability is a part of the broader developmental shift; however, l ive-presentation facilitates the nascent integration ability in 3-year-olds. Functional neuroanatomy of gesture-speech integration in children varies with individual differences in gesture processing.
Gesture is an integral part of children's communicative repertoire. However, little is known about the neurobiology of speech and gesture integration in the developing brain. We investigated how 8- to 10-year-old children processed gesture that was essential to understanding a set of narratives. We asked whether the functional neuroanatomy of gesture-speech integration varies as a function of (...
متن کاملAltered integration of speech and gesture in children with autism spectrum disorders
The presence of gesture during speech has been shown to impact perception, comprehension, learning, and memory in normal adults and typically developing children. In neurotypical individuals, the impact of viewing co-speech gestures representing an object and/or action (i.e., iconic gesture) or speech rhythm (i.e., beat gesture) has also been observed at the neural level. Yet, despite growing e...
متن کاملGesture-speech integration in children with specific language impairment.
BACKGROUND Previous research suggests that speakers are especially likely to produce manual communicative gestures when they have relative ease in thinking about the spatial elements of what they are describing, paired with relative difficulty organizing those elements into appropriate spoken language. Children with specific language impairment (SLI) exhibit poor expressive language abilities t...

متن کاملEvaluation and integration of speech and pointing gestures during referential understanding.
Two experiments investigated the relative influence of speech and pointing gesture information in the interpretation of referential acts. Children averaging 3 and 5 years of age and adults viewed a videotape containing the independent manipulation of speech and gestural forms of reference. A man instructed the subjects to choose a ball or a doll by vocally labeling the referent and/or pointing ...
